Manufacture History of the Foxfire Camper Company (Gulf Stream Coach)Foxfire campers were produced by Gulf Stream Coach, a leading family-owned RV manufacturer. Here is the key manufacturing history:
- 1971: The Shea family, led by Jim Shea Sr., founded the company in Nappanee, Indiana. They began in manufactured housing under Fairmont Homes, building high-quality homes from the ground up using advanced construction techniques.
- 1983: The Shea family established Gulf Stream Coach to enter the RV market. Their very first RV was the Foxfire travel trailer – a pull-behind camper that brought innovative features never before seen in most travel trailers. The Foxfire benefited directly from the company’s manufactured housing expertise, resulting in stronger construction, better insulation, and higher-quality interiors.
- 1980s–1990s: The Foxfire line quickly gained popularity. Models from this era (such as the 1984 M-2280 and 1985 M-2220) are still found across the country today. Gulf Stream expanded its lineup to include motorhomes, fifth wheels, and additional travel trailers.
- 1990s: Jim Shea Sr.’s three sons assumed day-to-day leadership, continuing the family tradition of quality and innovation.
- Today: Gulf Stream Coach remains 100% family-owned and operated by the Shea family. It has grown into one of the industry’s largest family-run RV manufacturers, producing over 140 models across 22 brands and nearly 300,000 recreation vehicles. While the original Foxfire models are classic/vintage, the company’s commitment to craftsmanship started with that very first Foxfire trailer.
Many Foxfire pull-behind campers from the 1980s and beyond are still on the road or stored on private property. Over time, age, weather, and wear can make them difficult to sell or move – that’s where we come in.
